The host, chapter 10 (part 1)

Sorry guys, but I'm super busy again. I couldn't do the whole thing in one sitting. But hey, something is something.

In this chapter Wanderer and Melanie go shopping and head out to the desert. Yeah, that's pretty much it.

Hello everyone and welcome to 5 facts you didn't know about aliens.  In today's episode we evaluate the parasite aliens from the host as they shop around for supplies. Here's what we have learned so far:

5) They like to pick hosts as stupid as they are. This lets them cope better with their new host. That's the only explanation as to why Wanda, who is stupid, picked Melanie.

I took a deep breath, trying to tell myself that I wasn’t going along with this. I was simply trying to get more coordinates from her, that was all. When I had the whole story, I would find someone—a different Seeker, maybe, one less repulsive than the one assigned to me—and pass the information along. I was just being thorough, I promised myself.

(Why are you going along with this?! It's not like you have made friends with her! I have yet to see a pocahontas like moment where you two make friends  and realize what you have been doing is wrong, You are just doing this because Jared wet your panties and that's not a good reason to go along with this!)

My awkward attempt to lie to myself was so pathetic that Melanie didn’t pay any attention to it, felt no worry at all. It must be too late for me, as the Seeker had warned. Maybe I should have taken the shuttle.

Too late? I wish!Melanie grumbled.I can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do. I can’t even raise my hand! Her thought was a moan of frustration.

(The why did you tell her all about where the last humans were! Spineless people can indeed sell you out, even more so when they have no attachment to you! What makes you think she won't talk when questioned? She looks like a squealer to me and this trip was originally to kill you, you dumb broad! I can't believe this is the same Melanie that committed suicide and protected her secrets so well.)

4) Aliens lead boring lives and such rely on strangers to entertain them. This leads to them being overly friendly and nosy.

(One extremely nosy talk later)

Melanie was thinking sulfurous thoughts about the kind old man.

He was being nice. He’s sincerely concerned about my welfare, I reminded her.

You’re all very creepy, she told me acidly. Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to talk to strangers?

3) They live like the smurfs (aka, they’re communists)

I can’t get used to not paying for things, she said, changing the subject. What’s the point of scanning them?

Inventory, of course. Is he supposed to remember everything we took when he needs to order more?

(No opinion on that. Just putting it out there)

2) And why can they be communists? Because they’re perfect.

Besides, what’s the point of money when everyone is perfectly honest? I paused, feeling the guilt again so strongly that it was an actual pain. Everyone but me, of course.

(Yeah! It’s not like they do horrible things like stealing bodies, tricking victims and committing mass genocide to satisfy their needs. Our kind, wonderful and honest heroes would never do such a horrible thing)

1) Aliens don’t know that water is more important than food at the desert.

This actually makes me question, how do aliens plan invasions? This is one of the most elemental facts about living on earth and about human endurance, unlike how to survive in a jungle for 10 days.  Shouldn’t her research show about this and other facts like this? She was a professor even! How does Wanderer not know this?

'Sulfurous'? Really? Her thoughts smelt like rotten eggs? Eww... I can't even think of what she meant by that? Melanie thought sickening thoughts? What?

I have a question to Meyer. How the fuck did we lose to these things? They're stupid! Rocks have more brains! 'Oh, lets go into the desert with no water', if I were Melanie, I'd think she was trying to kill me...slowly.
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 28th, 2010 08:47 pm (UTC)
XD I can only guess she meant horrible and thought it wasn't fancy enough.

And we lost because, story wise, we are as stupid as them. I'm sorry but I can't get over the fact Melanie is telling her everything and guiding her to what could be the last normal humans around. She doesn't control Wanderer, they aren't friends and she hasn't pledged secrecy. Yes, she's calling herself a "traitor" but that could be an easy fix. Ford can come in, squeeze her shoulder and ask her to tell him everything or the Seeker could torture her for it. She looks like a squealer to me. Wanderer being a wimp, by admission of the story, doesn't mean she won't backstab Melanie. Meyer really sucks at emotional development.
Carakaslacarakasla on July 28th, 2010 08:57 pm (UTC)
What's so bad about 'horrible'? That fit way better than 'sulfurous'. Oh, I forgot, the thesaurus is her rape bitch down in the basement. She should really leave it alone for a bit, she might kill it.

Emo-tio-nal...deve-lop-ment...? What the hell is that? THAT can't be important to a Romance story with a side of understanding between two races. GOD, we all know it's all about how hot the main hero is (and sometimes the side love interest). We can't have something like...emo-tio-nal...deve-lop-ment...get in the way. Dear god, I don't even know what that is! /epic sarcasm.
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 28th, 2010 09:06 pm (UTC)
But then she won't show what a smarty pants she actually is.

Yeah, that's The host in a nutshell. I just sat yesterday thinking at what point did Melanie decided she could trust Wanderer with the location of her younger brother! You know, the alien who drove out to kill her, is controlling her body and is in charge of locatting her brother to hand in to the aliens. (facepalm)

And why is Wanderer going along with this? I could try to understand it as Melanie's feeling taken over, but I just don't feel it. We don't really meet Jamie and the Jared scenes are horrible. I don't give a crap about either so I can't imagine Wanderer caring about either.

Ya know, more people would probably consider her smart if she...you know, wrote a proper book and used the thesaurus sparingly. But no, she's just a pompous bitch.

*hands over cookies* Because this is beyond stupid. Why must everyone have a lobotomy?
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 28th, 2010 09:35 pm (UTC)
(Gasp!) But that would be madness! Why think when writing? That sounds kinda hard.

Thank you! (Eats cookies) I can forgive a lot of things, but lack of emotional development in a boring book is not one of them.
Carakaslacarakasla on July 28th, 2010 09:48 pm (UTC)
Yes, yes, I know, compared to the other arts, writing is very easy and need very little thought and creativity. I mean, 13 year olds write fan fiction all of the time! Books only need plot, spelling and grammar, chatacterization, setting, emotional development, continuity, consistancy, have the proper balance between exposition and action, climaxes (or anti-climax if the story calls for it), inciting incidents, round characters, static characters, and hell cardboard cut outs once in a while. Nah, writing is psychotically easy and anyone can do it.
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 28th, 2010 10:38 pm (UTC)
Exactly! Super easy!

But let's be real, people in general aren't very picky when it comes to books. It's all about the next fix.

Which reminds me, how are you doing with that dragon story?
Carakaslacarakasla on July 28th, 2010 10:54 pm (UTC)
Yes...sadly. I makes a young writer like me very nervous. And people wonder why I want to go the Stieg Larsson route, except the dying part.

I actually just hit 40,000 words. I'm no where done, but I'm pretty happy I hit that point (and I went over 100 pages at the same time :D). Since, I don't think I ever hit that point before, but I can't be sure since I never checked. It's slow work though, unlike Meyer, I didn't start and finish in 3 months or whatever it was. I've been working on mine for over a year (a year and a half come October).
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 28th, 2010 11:16 pm (UTC)
I know what you mean.

Well, if you need somebody to look it over I can help. I'm helping Zelda with hers. I can't this week, but I have some time the next.
Carakaslacarakasla on July 28th, 2010 11:32 pm (UTC)
Well, I already have someone going over it. What I am doing is giving out the first three chapters to see if it can draw people in. I guess I could post it on this (empty) account, but I get nervous because I'm actually quite shy when it comes to my story. I've been writing it for a year (and planning for five) but it's only been in the last, oh, month and a half that I've told people about it. But, if you want to see an excerpt, I can post it on LiveJournal and you can read. Sorry it say it's only the first three chapters, but I'm neurotic when it comes to my story. Very neurotic XD.
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 28th, 2010 11:36 pm (UTC)
It's ok, I know what you mean. XD You do what you feel comfortable doing, just remember you can't be shy when you send it to publishers. So if you do, link me, and if you don't then you don't.
Carakaslacarakasla on July 28th, 2010 11:42 pm (UTC)
I probably will. *Will need to figure out how to link...* I need to get over my shyness, whether I publish it or not, it holds me back too much. Besides, I have gotten several good reviews elsewhere XD. I need to spread out.
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 28th, 2010 11:44 pm (UTC)
Have you considered entering contests? That's how I got over most of my shyness.
Carakaslacarakasla on July 28th, 2010 11:48 pm (UTC)
I've thought about it, but I think I'm ineligible for NaNoWriMo, and I am not aware of any other ones. It would really spruce up my queries letters if I did XD.
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 28th, 2010 11:55 pm (UTC)
That's no good. You have to research about that. I used to buy a writing magazine. I can see if I can find an issue and look for resources.
Carakaslacarakasla on July 29th, 2010 12:15 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'll admit I haven't done any research, because I haven't had any need or want. Maybe once I get a bit farther, I'll start the research.

But, I posted a chapter on LJ, if you want to check it out. I don't know how to link though >.<.
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 29th, 2010 12:20 am (UTC)
Didn't mean to upset you, in case I did. I'm never really sure.

I'll check it on th weekend.
Carakaslacarakasla on July 29th, 2010 01:19 am (UTC)
Don't mind me, I wasn't upset XD, just making a statement.

I give my thanks ahead of time :).
Miss Shaolinashaolina on July 29th, 2010 01:45 am (UTC)
XD Sorry. I'm just bad at reading internet lines.

No worries. I'll message you when done.

Late comment is late
Hiya, just reading through your recaps. You do a great job, BTW.

I just want to say that the aliens from this pile of plague-ridden bile are directly cribbed from the series "Animorphs". Seriously, these things are SMeyer-fied Yeerks. And I hate them.

*kicks the wall*

Re: Late comment is late
Thank you! I need to get back to it, but my recap computer broke down and that's where the book is and the program I like to use. It's been a pain. (Plus I'm kinda distracted right now XD) But I'm glad you enjoy what I have so far.
